HAPPY TRAILS!

From mild to wild, single-track mountain bike madness to leisurely day hikes, your sense of adventure will find direction in Tucker County.

A Walk on the Wild Side

Both state parks and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge conduct nature-based interpretive hikes on their trail systems. Whether investigating the migratory birds, some of the plant life, endangered species or just wildlife watching, these programs will connect you with the environment. The Northland Loop in Dolly Sods is a wonderful, short hike that has interpretive signage along the way. You’ll see why this area is indeed special and unique.

RAIL TRAILS

Once veins feeding the heart of American industry, Tucker County’s dormant rails have been converted into managed trails. Visit the depot in Parsons for more information.

Allegheny Highlands Rail Trail

Once a thriving train line, hauling wood products and coal, this 21+ mile rail bed running from Parsons to Elkins is perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. You will find parking areas and informational kiosks en-route during your journey. This trail meanders through woods and fields with National Forest trail heads intersecting along the way. A smooth ride!

Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail

Once a thriving rail line, this 10+ mile grade starts in Thomas and proceeds through the majestic Blackwater Canyon, ending in the community of Hendricks. En route, on foot or bike, see a section of coke ovens that have been restored, check the stonework under some of the bridges, and marvel at the grandeur of the Canyon.
