Canaan Valley Resort

Labor Day Weekend Celebration, Sept. 2-5th
Wind down the summer with a relaxing getaway in the mountains. Lots of games and activities are planned for all ages. Enjoy nearby activities like horseback riding, white water rafting or canoeing, and cavern tours while visiting the resort and Potomac Highland region.

Blackbird Knob/Cabin Mountain Walk, Sept. 10th

Leaf Peepers Picnic Lunch on the Mountain, Sept. 28-30th
The 24th Annual Leaf Peepers Festival is presented by the Tucker County Alpine Festival and we are celebrating the blazing colors of Autumn in this high mountain paradise! You are invited to join in on all the fun and activities September 28-30th, 2012 in Tucker County, WV. Join us for the Annual Fall Colors Golf Tournament, the 2k/5k Run For It, pet show, photo contest, inflatable amusements, the ever-famous Duck Race, Appalachian Food & Craft Fair, and more! Make plans now to attend the 24thd annual Leaf Peepers Festival today!
Field of Fire-Dolly Sods Hike & Tour, Sept. 24th
We invite you to explore the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area over Leaf Peepers weekend. We will begin our day by visiting the Bird Banding Station where we will watch as live birds are banded as they start their migration season. Afterwards, we will continue on our journey for vibrant fall colors and marvel at the blueberry (huckleberry) bushes turning a bright fire red with the evergreen and hardwood trees becoming multi colored. This exploration allows a fantastic opportunity for photographing nature’s autumn beauty. Bring your cameras and expect to capture breathtaking scenery. Boxed lunch and shuttle service provided. Shuttle leaves Main Lodge at 9am. Pre-registration required/fee charged. Please go their event page for more information and registration forms.

Timberline Resort

Labor Day Weekend Celebration, August 31-September 3rd
There will be live entertainment at 9pm on September 2nd and 3rd in the Fireside Grill and Timbers Pub. Scenic chairlift will be operational September 3rd, 4th and 5th, 10am until 5pm. Mountain Bike Center and Timberline Stables open daily. There is a full menu in Timberline’s Fireside Grill daily. No cover charge for the live entertainment. Up tempo celebration in Timbers Pub will continue until late at night both Friday and Saturday.
Blue Grass Festival Weekend, September 14 – 16
Talented Performers Harry and Delores Baisden This weekend features afternoon and early evening bluegrass performances. Up tempo celebrations in Timber’s Pub will continue until late at night both Friday and Saturday.
Autumn Color Scenic Chair Mountain Exploration Weekends, September 21 – 23 and September 28- 30
Ride Timberline’s 1000 foot vertical scenic chairlift to the summit. Expect flaming colors of autumn to arrive early at these higher elevations (about 4000 feet). The chairlift is operational weekends from the Timberline Bike Shop at the ski lodge. Hike or bike the designated trails from the top of Herz Mountain. Ask J. R. Nolan at the bike shop about the new high altitude scenic hiking and biking trails. .

What’s Blooming, Sept. 11th
1:00 pm. Meet at the Refuge Visitor Center. Join Master Naturalist volunteers for a look at late summer wildflowers.
Valley Vibes: Bats, Sept. 17th
7 pm, meet at the Refuge Visitor Center. Led by Professor Emeritus Jim Van Gundy.
Red Spruce Restoration Planting Day, Sept. 17th
10am meet at the Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. Come and enjoy planting Spruce trees back into the Canaan Valley area.
Migration Bird Walk, Sept. 24th
7am meet at the Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, led by Volunteer Casey Rucker

Biking Events

Revenge of the Rattlesnake Ultra Marathon Race, Sept. 15th
The 29th annual Revenge of the Rattlesnake Race is possibly one of the longest running mountain events around. Held on land just outside of Davis, WV thanks to property owners Allegheny Power, Canaan Valley Institute, and the Vandalia Heritage Foundation. This race is the usual 35-50 mile backcountry race that is part of the WVMBA Ultra series designed to kick everyone’s butt! Registration will be held at the Blackwater Bikes shop in downtown Davis on race day, or stop in and pre-register if you’re in the area. For more information check out www.iplayoutside.com
